Historical evidence does point to the Egyptian Mau originating in Egypt, with artwork dating back 3000 years of cats resembling it. Some theories state they emerged from the Nile Basin all the way till Western Europe. Research also shows them to be possibly related to the Maine Coon and the Turkish Angora. The breed’s popularity and recognition began with the exiled Russian princess, Natalie Troubetskoy’s journey to Italy where she transported three Maus with her, and then to New York, in 1956. Their beauty instantly raised their status and by 1977, earned them recognition with the Cat Fancier's Association of USA. Despite their establishments as pets to treasure, their numbers prove them rare, with only about 200 kittens registered with the CFA every year.
