The background to a special smallholding venture

Stephen and Dean Clayton-Madge on how a very special place was created – meet Tregoose Old Mill
-
Having spent a lot of time in Cornwall together with our dogs, it does not take long before you start to look at property prices, drive past beautiful homes and picture yourself living here. You start to realise that one day a different way of life is possible for those seeking a change. With a background in hospitality management, we certainly realised that we wanted to use all this knowledge to create experiences that enable those in more urban areas to reconnect with nature by embracing a slower, more relaxed pace of time partnered with nature’s seasonal changes.
Tregoose Old Mill was a “back up” option to a property we had intended to purchase. Driving across the mystical ford, we both independently realised at the point of parking up that we intended this to be our new adventure. We later confessed this to each other as we drove away from the viewing. After a long and painful conveyancing period, thoughts quickly moved to how we could bring back to life an old piggery, grain store and how to use the land not only to drive revenue but to complement and support the environment for future generations.
POINTS OF DIFFERENCE FOR HOLIDAY LETS INCLUDED SHEEP
Many people dream of creating holiday lets but we wanted to stand out and do something different. Deciding on those points of difference lead us to how we could embrace our smallholding and its future.

How hand tools shaped the countryside
Farming and smallholding practices have altered over the past century or so. Some have been subtle, others less so and many brought about by technology and legislation. In the penultimate of his series, Jeremy Hobson continues to outline just a few of them.

Dealing with bullying behaviours in chickens
We love the idyllic idea of flocks of free ranging chickens, who live peacefully amongst each other and with us. What happens when this is not possible due to legal housing restrictions for poultry or practical reasons due to predators? Your chickens might start to bully each other. Fiona and Hugh Osborne look at the options to deal with bullying.
