The Country Smallholder
|December 2025
Christmas is coming up quite rapidly now but there is still time to find that perfect gift for your family and friends who live close to the land or those who appreciate appreciate what you do and want to be part of it. Many of these gifts are designed and made at the farm, or in the country but will fit into town and city life. They range from beautifully practical to just simply, beautiful and lovely to own.
-
Let's begin with gifts from alpacas.
Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside, Yew Tree Alpacas is home to a friendly herd of 50 alpacas — including 21 breeding females, 21 boys (many trained for alpaca walking), and 8 delightful yearlings born in 2024. The business is built around three core areas: alpaca walking, alpaca retail, and a small-scale breeding programme, producing 5 to 10 cria most years.
Their alpaca journey began in 2009 with four females from local breeders. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into a thriving rural enterprise. In 2017, they launched their popular alpaca walking experiences, which now run from April through September. These walks have become the heart of their business, they say, offering visitors a unique and memorable way to connect with their animals. From late October through Christmas, their focus shifts to retail. Catch them at Christmas Fairs throughout November and early December, where they will be showcasing their full range of alpaca-inspired gifts.
