All about the boots

The Country Smallholder

|

March 2025

With their feathered feet, friendly nature, and curious charm, Booted Bantams are a standout breed for all poultry keepers. Cara Wheeldon finds out what makes these little birds so special—and why you will never stop at just one.

All about the boots

Regarding beauty, curiosity, and character, few breeds can rival that of the Booted Bantam. Known for their distinctive feathered feet and inquisitive nature, these small birds leave a lasting impression.

Stuart Ames, a 50-year-old retail merchandiser from Cheshire and chairman of the Booted Bantam Society, shares his insights into the breed, their unique traits, and what makes them a delightful addition to any flock.

Stuart's love for Booted Bantams began well over a decade ago. “We originally went to our local chicken shop in search of hatching eggs to go under a broody hen, and we just picked up a couple of Booted Bantam eggs. It was game over from there. We are now obsessed with boots,” he says. Since then, Stuart has accumulated a flock numbering between 250 and 300 birds—a testament to their irresistible charm.

Dealing with bullying behaviours in chickens

We love the idyllic idea of flocks of free ranging chickens, who live peacefully amongst each other and with us. What happens when this is not possible due to legal housing restrictions for poultry or practical reasons due to predators? Your chickens might start to bully each other. Fiona and Hugh Osborne look at the options to deal with bullying.
