Master John's masterclass

A Fell remains on form to land a cash prize, a lead-rein competitor lands a pleasant surprise for her anxious parents and a young rider reaps reward for dedication
ONE of the most coveted prizes on the showing circuit, the £1,000 Ellena Thomas supreme Pretty Polly ridden championship, was claimed in style by Victoria Taylor and the striking nine-year-old Fell stallion Birkettbank Master John (Jay).
The pair delivered a flawless performance, impressing judges and spectators alike with their polished presentation and undeniable presence.
But the win very nearly didn't happen: “We almost missed it completely,” said Victoria. “We got stuck in traffic on the way in and as we pulled into the showground, I saw the class before had already started. It was a case of tack up, brush over and straight into the ring.”
Victoria and reigning London International (LIHS) Heritage champion Jay have been on form all season, having booked their Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) ticket at the Northern Counties Pony Association (NCPA) Derbyshire Festival, where they also took champion.
“We're incredibly grateful to the sponsors for offering such a generous prize - there aren’t many shows where you come away with a profit!” said Victoria. “It was great to be able to pull off something a bit different in the championship - Jay is such a diva, he loves an audience and he really rose to the occasion.”
