REGAL RESIDENCE WINDSOR

Why It's home to a certain royal who will be celebrating 70 years on the throne this year, the first British monarch to do so. Her Majesty the Queen regularly takes up residence at Windsor Castle, and there will be a series of events for the Platinum Jubilee in and around the historic town.

Blessed with a scenic riverside setting, Windsor's postcard prettiness extends to the 500-acre Great Park, a former Norman hunting forest. Today it includes a deer park, woods, gardens and wild grasslands, perfect for strolls and picnics. You can also visit the castle, as parts are open to visitors all-year round - the tour includes St George's Chapel, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married in 2018.

Nearby is the Theatre Royal, which dates from 1910, and which often previews performances before they head off to London's West End. Within a short drive are attractions such as Legoland - a must-visit for kids big and small, with rides, models and building workshops. There's also Ascot Racecourse, for those who fancy a flutter, and The Savill Garden, one of the most attractive ornamental gardens in the UK.

Don't miss Commemorative events include Windsor's Big Lunch (which will be the longest picnic table ever), a special Jubilee Concert, and an exhibition at the castle displaying the Coronation Dress worn by the Queen at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953 (windsorplatinumjubilee.co.uk).
