Look Out, It's April Fool's
WOMAN'S WEEKLY

Like it or loathe it, the tradition of April Fool’s Day seems to be more popular today than ever
The true origins of April Fool’s Day are lost to history, but according to one rather fun suggestion, it may hark back to 13th-century Nottinghamshire. When the locals of the village of Gotham heard that King John wanted to take some of their land to build a hunting lodge, it is said they decided to play the ‘fool’.
When the king’s counsellors arrived, they found the villagers doing all manner of crazy things, such as trying to drown the local fish, so they recommended the lodge be built elsewhere as everyone in the town was clearly ‘mad’.
Whatever its real origin, the tradition of April Fool’s Day is now as active in the UK as ever, as these classic pranks go to show.
Woof spoof
Our furry friends haven’t escaped April Fool pranks either. In 2011, pet food manufacturers Pedigree created an ad for ‘Doggie Dentures’ on an online shopping channel. ‘Dogs have self-esteem issues too,’ said the presenter, ‘So we aim to return their winning smile!’
