They told him it was a place of evil. Where trees refused to grow. Where no animal would go, and over which no bird would fly. The Nest of the Fire Eagle. It was 1949. Russian geologist Vadim Kolpakov was on a study expedition in Irkutsk, Siberia, where he met the local Yakut people. They warned him not to visit the Nest of the Fire Eagle – the Patomskiy crater – as those who did sometimes didn’t return. But Vadim was intrigued. He journeyed on, deep into the woods. And then he found it.
