Mpumalanga is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in South Africa. Striking rugged mountain ranges, the Blyde River Canyon, one of the world’s largest canyons, cascading waterfalls, exquisite fauna and flora and a rich and diverse cultural history are what make this region one of South Africa’s much loved tourist playgrounds.

Getting Around

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, (KMIA) is 28km northeast of the provincial capital Nelspruit (Mbombela), There are daily flights into Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Some of the private lodges within the region also offer charter flights from KMIA directly to the lodge.

Once on the ground, the best way to explore this region is to self-drive. Hiring a car is easy with all the major car rental companies being represented at the airport. The roads in Mpumalanga are generally good-quality tarmac, although there are places where you’ll find potholes and stray animals and for this reason we strongly advise against driving before sunrise or after sunset if possible.

Health Tips

Malaria occurs within the Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga, right through the year. Malaria is spread by the Anopheles mosquito, so preventing yourself being bitten is of paramount importance. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all travelers to Mpumalanga Lowveld.

Mosquito nets and repellents are also strongly recommended after sundown. Try to avoid being bitten by wearing clothing that covers the arms, legs, and ankles and use repellent’
