After ETNZ’s victory in the America’s Cup, change is set to take place at all levels. Is an Australian challenge already waiting in the wings?
The Kiwis have won the America’s Cup, and that, thankfully, means change. And not singular either, the changes will be widespread – but do not expect a return to the 1990s with 90ft monohulls racing over courses that take two and a half to three hours to complete. That’s regression of the worst possible style – rather it will continue to maintain sailing development.
John Bertrand, the Australian skipper who ended the New York YC’s stranglehold on the Cup back in 1983, and was unfailingly evident in Bermuda, opened an address to the media with these words: “I am disruption.” We all sat up to take notice, while we pondered on whether there was anything more to his fortnight on the island than merely a trip down memory lane.
