BACK ISSUE

Despite beating Aston Villa 2-1 home and away in season 1927/28 we were relegated and would stay in Division Two for the next five seasons. But how unlucky were we to go down with bottom club Middlesbrough.

We finished on 38 points with the seven clubs above us – Portsmouth, Burnley, Manchester United, West Ham, Liverpool, Sunderland and The Wednesday - all on 39. Even Boro got close with their final tally of 37.

Villa were comfortable in eighth place while Everton – with Dixie Dean finishing as the division’s top scorer with an incredible 60 goals were Champions. Manchester City and Leeds United gained promotion and Blackburn Rovers lifted the FA Cup.

Spare a thought for Huddersfield Town who were runners-up in the First Division and defeated finalists at Wembley where they went down 3-1.
