Adding Youth To Our ‘Golden Generation'
The Cricket Paper

Richard Dore on a homely Yorkshire club that will not be resting on its laurels despite a season of huge success last year
-
Many cricket clubstalk of a ‘golden generation’somewhere in their history, be it the Twenties, Sixties or Seventies, but for West Leeds outfit New Farnley that time is now.
The club was established in 1952 and until recently major honours had always escaped them, until the Yorkshire club beat Hoylandswaine to claim the Heavy Woollen Cup in 2016.
New Farnley’s form in the ECB Bradford Premier League has steadily improved and the club backed up their success in 2017 with a first-ever win in the Bradford League Priestley Cup – beating Methley in the final.
It’s been a slow route to success for New Farnley, who lost everything 25 years ago when their clubhouse at Farnley Park burned down, and although they’re enjoying their ‘golden generation’, cricket chairman Paul Hutchison is targeting sustained success.
“The club’s not overly old in the big scheme of cricket and there’s not much winning heritage connected to New Farnley,” said the former Yorkshire bowler. “More than one person at the club has said that they thought last year was the best year they’ve ever had.
