HOW NICK CORKILL OVERCAME ADDICTION AND BECAME ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHERS
Steve England
Winning

In 2016 Nick Corkill sent in his shots from a surf trip to Norway with a few lads from Croyde, we were pretty stoked on them, so it was a no-brainer to run an article. What we didn't realize at the time was the significance of this action in Nick's life. Fast forward to 2019, and we are running the Offshore photo comp, and Nick sent in some of his amazing shots, including one that stood out from a Scotland trip. It made our final cut and commendation from all the judges. Nearly won actually, but Phill's shot from North Wales pipped it. Nick came down to Newquay for the gallery night, and we got chatting and had a great time. It was great to meet him in person, funny chap loves his surfing and photography, but he still didn't mention the significance of the Norway trip. Then little snippets started turning up on our timeline. Nick was doing interviews around the country about his photography, and its place in helping him overcome addiction.

It turned out that after seven years in the Navy and other jobs at sea, Nick had begun to use 'alcohol as a distraction from his real problems'. It became an addiction until one day he was brave enough to recognize the track he was on and ask for help. As part of his recovery process surfing and photography became a way to rise above his problems. Then the Lofoten trip came up.

In all the interviews, Nick was saying that having the article published in Carve was a landmark in his recovery. It affirmed he was on the right path in some ways and spurred him on. For us, it was one of those "Wait, what?" moments. We had no idea it had been that significant. From our short talk, you couldn't tell what a brave journey he had been on and more than that it gave his shortlisted photo even more meaning. When you know the story behind it all, it is a pretty poignant photograph. And it just says "winning."
