You’ve Never Had It So Good! What a Time to Be Alive…
Flicking through The NLP recently, it dawned on me that we are living in a golden age of football information. Believe it or not, despite the boyish good looks at the top of this page, I am old enough to remember when finding out about your club was a far less straightforward business.
Indeed there was one instance when it was literally a case of word of mouth. Since commencing my support of The Mighty Chester, the only home match I ever missed while physically in the city was on a Friday night when The Blues were entertaining Bury.
Against my better judgement, I was forced into attending a pointless school function instead. Walking home with no clue as to what had transpired, I resorted to asking people in the street if they knew the result. Hitting pay dirt at the first attempt, an ashen-faced fan furiously claimed that we had thrown away a three-goal lead in a 4-4 draw. Fanciful as this seemed, his demeanour seemed to back up the awful truth, but it wasn’t until I checked the paper the next morning that the freak result was officially confirmed.
