The Gulls’ chief looked on with pride as a hat-trick from Danny Wright and goals from Ben Whitfield and Gary Warren saw them power past previously unbeaten Hartlepool United.
“Danny was great and the players know him and it’s about giving him the quality to work with,’’ said Johnson.
“As we stand at the moment we have what it takes, but it’s only early. We have a good team spirit and we knew this was a big chance to get further ahead at the top early on.
“Last year we started well and this year we felt we needed a bigger squad with a bit more pace and energy.
