THE gloves are off! First came the seismic announcement that Angelina Jolie was divorcing her husband, Brad Pitt, ending their glamorous, near-mythic union after two years of marriage, twelve years together and six children. Now the real battle has begun.

Angelina had barely filed papers on Sept. 19, citing irreconcilable differences — and, shockingly, asking for sole physical custody of their kids, Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 8 — when her manager issued a cryptic and seemingly finger-pointing statement that the actress made her decision “in the best interest of taking care of her family.” But while Brad responded in his own statement that he was “very saddened” by the news and that “what matters most now is the well-being of our kids,” a flurry of shocking rumors then surfaced concerning his alleged problems with parenting, partying and infidelity, making it seem like he’s an unfit father. “To me, it was nothing short of character assassination by people in Angelina’s camp,” a friend of Brad’s tells Star. “It’s absolutely outrageous — especially since, in my opinion, it’s Brad who’s been living with a ticking time bomb of a partner all these years!”

SMEAR CAMPAIGN?

In one shocking report, a source claimed that Angelina, 41, had hired a private investigator who discovered that Brad, 52, had not only cheated on her with French actress Marion Cotillard while the two were filming their new movie, Allied, in London earlier this year, but that he was living it up at raunchy parties “full of hard drugs and Russian hookers.”
