Huma Qureshi had to dig deep when playing the protagonist in the dystopian Netflix drama Leila.
Adapted from Prayaag Akbar’s dystopian novel, Leila, a new Netflix series, is set in 2049 India, but could easily be mistaken for 1940s Germany. There’s a call for racial purity. There are labour camps with tattooed prisoners and gas chambers. While all hail the Supreme Leader Aryavarta (Sanjay Suri), dissent is suppressed. It’s against this grim backdrop that Shalini Pratap (Huma Qureshi) sets out to find her daughter Leila, the child of a Hindu-Muslim union.
