World Wetlands Day Event To Focus On Heaney Country

WORLD Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February.

This marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

A two-day event in Belfast and Mid-Ulster is telling the story of Lough Neagh and its little sister Lough Beg which form the country’s biggest wetland.

This year’s theme is ‘Prized land, not wasteland’. Love Lough Beg: Heaney Country is celebrating this international day with two events. An awareness raising afternoon on Friday, February 2 in Belfast’s Crescent Arts Centre from 2pm and a celebratory day with activities for all the family on Saturday, February 3 at Lough Beg’s wetlands and The Thatched Inn, Castledawson.

The organisers are asking government and political parties to reconsider a short section of the route of the new A6 road in order to safeguard Lough Beg’s internationally important wetlands.
