An Evening Well Spent

Yorkshire Game Angling’s Warren Langridge makes the most of the summer evenings as he targets Toft Newton’s resident rainbows as the light fades…

An Evening Well Spent

In this day and age it can be hard to find time to get out on the bank. With work and home life being the priority, it’s sad to say that fishing can sometimes take a back seat for many of us.

Nevertheless, we do have something going for us in the summer months. The daylight hours are now at their maximum and if my weekends are booked up, I like to take advantage of an evening session. The water temperatures are now very high on most smaller still waters and the likelihood of catching during the day can be slim.

Your best option is to visit a bigger venue now because a larger expanse of water takes a little longer to warm up, allowing the chance of a fish before they become lethargic. The first and last hours are the best times to target because the sun is lower in the sky and the temperatures are more favourable.

With Toft Newton being within comfortable travelling distance from work, it is often my venue of choice for an evening session. The variety of fish you come across is amazing. From big perch and pike to overwintered, full finned browns and rainbows, Toft produces quality fish all year through.

Crystal-clear water greets me today. This being the norm with Toft, I know that whatever tactics I end up on, it will need refining to suit the tap water in front of me!

Be Prepared

When fishing for only a few hours, it is key to have as much tackle prepared as you can. I have two rods already set up and safely transported in a double rod tube, reels attached, leaders already tied; this saves me a good 30 minutes in tackling up.

I would like to think that my knowledge of Toft Newton is pretty good and I can therefore make a good guess at the setups that will work prior to arrival for a short evening session.
