Unique Nothern Cape Experiences

If you’ve ever thought about visiting the Northern Cape, you’ve probably pictured yourself doing one of the following: Camping, game viewing, hunting or hiking. However, there is so much more to see and do in the province of diamonds; adventures not frequently mentioned in the usual tourist guide book or website.

Sutherland is one of the darkest places on the planet, due to the remote location of the town, which is why it is ideal for stargazing. The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, is located here and is among the largest in the world. Measuring a total of 11 metres across it comprises of 91 individual 1-metre mirrors.

However, what is often overlooked is the fact that the town is also the coldest destination in South Africa, which means snow. During the winter months of June - July the average low in the town is between -1 or -2 degrees and has recorded a low of -16.

If you’re up for a real frosty winter, or Christmas in July, take a trip to Sutherland and build a snowman. Don’t expect toboggans to be readily available for rent in the town centre, but a body-board (or boogie board) will make the perfect substitute. Wrap up warmly and wander around a true winter wonderland.
