Finding a Sassanian Dirham
Treasure Hunting magazine|May 2017

It was a chilly early evening in January and Tobias Neto was preparing to go to the River Thames foreshore for some detecting. He takes up the story:-

Finding a Sassanian Dirham

“I’d checked the tide tables for that evening but they didn’t appear to be particularly promising. Despite all that, I got myself ready, making sure I had spare batteries for both my headlight and my Laser Scout, and off I went on my bicycle.

“Once at the Thames foreshore I spent the first 40 minutes or so concentrating on a particular area. A few signals produced the odd one and two pence coins, so I moved a bit further away, but once again not much in terms of signals or finds. An old padlock popped up and I picked up a few clay pipes and a small buckle but not really very much else of interest.

“Detecting on the Thames foreshore in the evenings has its advantages though as there tends to be far fewer boats going past, and therefore less waves, and almost no one else around. However I must stress that I am not advising stepping onto the foreshore during the evenings unless you know the area extremely well. Tides can easily cut you off from your access point if you are not experienced.

Lost and Found?

There have been several instances over my long detecting career where, not only has it has been a delight to be able to help people who have lost things, but also a great thrill when such losses are returned to their owners. I have several memories of such occurrences.
