In Bollywood you can be a newcomer or a star kid, but a single Friday can make or break your career. After the release of his debut film, Ishq Vishq, almost a decade back, he was labelled the new chocolate-boy of Bollywood, a tag that made his niche. What followed was a series of rom-coms, but none managed to impress. When the audience thought that the career of this actor was hitting the rocks, a romantic drama came his way which turned the tables for him, and managed to resurface his flagging career. That film was Jab We Met. Post which, this actor broke the mould and tried an intense film, something he was never known for. Today, a decade and more later, sitting across the table from SHAHID KAPOOR, I see an actor who has seen the good and the bad, the latter mostly, but has managed to remain thick skinned and mastered the genre of drama. The actor specifically says, “Do not call it a niche as I have already come out of it. People are usually addicted to smoking or drinking. You, on the other hand, are a coffee addict. Was that what got you high during the making of Udta Punjab?
Actually everybody thought that having coffee was a simple solution, but I wish it was just as simple as having coffee. It was very difficult, challenging, and scary to play Tommy Singh. Doing the part where he is the popular star who is loved by everybody, was much easier than doing the part where he was shown as a substance addict. Doing that was really difficult. I previously didn’t understand how to play the character. But the character was so exciting that I had to take it up as a challenge and play it. I have never ever been high in my life, whether on alcohol or any kind of substance, so I don’t know what it’s like and what exactly the state of mind is. I asked the director Abhishek (Chaubey) ‘Are you aware of what you are doing?
You might have come to the right actor but are you sure that you have come to the right person?’
He briefed me about the character and explained the topic to me. I even saw documentaries around drugs. And I think we have all been to enough parties to know what a little high person looks like (giggles). So I just plunged into it to try and achieve it.
This was the ground work you did, but you also went through a physical transformation. Was achieving that body difficult?
