Theatre has never failed Bollywood in providing a continuous and talented supply of actors who have contributed adequately to make every film a delight. One such actor is Ira Dubey, who was born with theatre in her blood, but is now enjoying her stint in films too.
Beginning to perform on stage at age five is no joke but it does become a bit easy when your mother is a gifted theatre artist. Ira’s mother Lillete Dubey is a known face in the theatre world and has directed and acted in a number of plays, most notable being Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man, which is the longest running play in English, having completed 497 shows across the world, including a two-week run on the Broadway. She also appeared in movies like Monsoon Wedding, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Baghban and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, to name a few.
Moving on to Ira, she starts off with, “Theatre is my first love, my passion and my nasha! My mother of course is a big part of that as I was her poonch (tail) while growing up and was always fascinated by the many avatars she would play on stage. I have performed with her in over 10 productions, touring both India and abroad. My parents met doing theatre together in college along with Barry John and Shah Rukh Khan in a theatre group called the Theatre Action Group (TAG), and my family has been dubbed a nautanki family over the years.”
