BANDMATES PHOEBE LOU AND JOEY CLOUGH’S FRIENDSHIP formed as that of many people who were teens a decade ago – via landline phones. “We were just teenagers doing three-way calls,” says Clough. “Remember those?”
They gravitated to each other, exploring their music styles and eventually forming a band with friends at their Steiner school in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Not your typical high-school assemblage, Snakadaktal (or affectionately, “Snaka”), took out the Triple J Unearthed spin-off competition for students in 2011, culminating in regular spots on the local festival circuit, two albums and a cult following. They were still so fresh that they celebrated a music publishing deal with beers they weren’t of the age to be served.
