Afua Dabanka’s Mo Saïque combines the cultures of her native Europe and ancestral Africa in a luxury shoe line.
Shoe obsession is nothing new as many men and women would agree. But turning that penchant into a business that brings something fresh to the conversation can be quite a feat. German-born Afua Dabanka does just that with her high-end shoe label Mo Saïque (mo-saique.com), launched in 2011.
Raised by Ghanaian parents and trained in London, Dabanka is a true global citizen and it’s reflected in her brand. Some designs are made in Italy, others in Britain, and some uppers for the heels are hand-beaded in Kenya and Ethiopia.
EBONY talks to the former financial services entrepreneur about her line, which melds the colors of Africa with the silhouettes of Europe.
