1. On a January morning, surfer Pete Devries headed along the point at Cox Bay in Tofino, B.C., to assess the surf before jumping in to catch a wave. The sun was just rising, the point covered in a dusting of new snow as photographer and fellow surfer Marcus Paladino snapped this shot. Cox Bay is a popular surfing spot in the summer, considered a “swell magnet” because even on the smallest days there’s still a wave for beginners or longboarders to ride.
In winter, it’s a different story, with the storm season making for more variable conditions day-to-day. “More often than not, we know everyone in the water,” says Paladino.

It started as a joke more than a decade ago, in a sodden, empty campground overlooking a rainforest valley. Unzipping our backpacking tent, my partner and I emerged into a silent, emerald tableau in the heart of Washington state’s Olympic National Park in early November. We were enveloped in a shroud of mist; even the heavy drips from cedar boughs and ravens’ cries seemed dreamlike. Days earlier, we had left on a last-minute trip driving south from Vancouver along the Pacific Coast, and here we suddenly were, in paradise. “From now on,” we swore to each other, “we travel only in the off-season.”
