Accelerate Recovery With Heat
Fitness His Edition
|January - February 2018
THE OPTIMISATION OF POST-EXERCISE RECOVERY IS ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC RESEARCH SUBJECTS IN THE WORLD OF EXERCISE SCIENCE.
-
WHETHER IT'S WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY OR ICE BATHS, SOME FORM OF COLD THERAPY HAS BECOME A MAINSTREAM APPROACH IN THE RECOVERY PLANS OF ELITE ATHLETES AND SERIOUS WEEKEND WARRIORS ALIKE.
These techniques aid the recovery process as extreme cold conditions act directly on the circulatory system and muscles, particularly in the extremities, resulting in vasoconstriction. This diverts peripheral blood flow to internal organs, promoting the removal of exercise metabolites and other by-products from muscle tissue, where they travel in the bloodstream and are more effectively expelled through the kidneys and liver. Cold also acts indirectly on the nervous and endocrine (hormonal) systems to more rapidly restore homeostasis and bodily function.

The Florida Effect: The Power Of Priming On Performance
We all like to think that we are in complete control of our actions, our mindsets, and, subsequently, our performance. But what if that weren’t true? Could it be that the words you hear on the radio or read on billboards or the pictures you see on your way to the change room could affect your subsequent performance in the gym, through their impact on your subconscious mind?Well, it just might, at least according to numerous studies into behavioural psychology that have looked at a concept known as the priming effect.
