Lost & Found
Florida Sport Fishing|November/December 2017

WHILE MANY COASTAL FLORIDIANS stick to the state’s sensational saltwater fisheries, I prefer the freshwater game. In fact, I’ll take the peace and quiet of a secluded sweetwater hot-spot over the chaos of a dozen center consoles harassing a single frigate bird any day of the week. However, during a recent outing deep into an urban canal system, things quickly went from calm to catastrophe.

Lost & Found

On a Saturday morning a few weeks ago, I performed my usual routine in preparation for a day on the water. After loading my kayak in the back of the pickup, I began making my way to a nearby canal where the peacock bass fishing had been epic. As I proceeded down the road, I chuckled at the long line of boaters waiting to launch at the local ramp, feeling a deeper appreciation for the simplicity of my game plan.

It wasn’t long before I was catching fish on every cast. While they weren’t monsters, I was having a blast and had the entire canal to myself. Further on down the bank, I saw something huge cruising along the surface and perfectly placed my popper just ahead of the wake. The bait was instantly annihilated and after a few spirited runs I caught a glimpse of a huge largemouth.

A Whole Different Animal - Wild Cats that Got the Cream

MOST ANGLERS HAVE STRONG BELIEFS ABOUT WHAT HULL TYPE IS BEST. Running hard in rough water requires a seaworthy platform with the strength and stability to keep you safe, comfortable and dry. Among the different trends that have consequently become evident from the evolution of center consoles, boat builders are cornering a new niche of complex and competitive catamarans harnessing more outboard power than ever before. Breaking the barrier with innovative hull designs and deck layouts, the newest catamarans offer unobstructed fishability while providing increased fuel economy and speed per applied horsepower.

The Lotus Effect - Exploring The Science Of The Shine

THERE HAVE BEEN COUNTLESS TECHNOLOGIES AND INNOVATIONS inspired by the animal kingdom, with the science of emulating nature known as biomimetics. Evolution has perfected natural designs and environmental approaches over hundreds of millions of years, providing chemists, biologists and engineers with a perfect platform to advance modern materials and manufacturing processes. Learning the way of the lotus leaf has revealed remarkable self-cleaning properties resulting from the unique flora’s ultrahydrophobic surface architecture producing water droplets in nearly perfect spherical shape.

Underwater LEDs

MY CENTER CONSOLE WAS RECENTLY OUTFITTED with full spectrum color-changing underwater LEDs and I can’t wait to test them out. I’m aware of their ability to attract forage and predator species to the boat from dusk till dawn, but are high intensity LEDs effective at attracting life during the day? If so, what color shines brightest amid the natural light of the sun?
