No ocean, no us,” says Dr Sylvia Earle in her latest documentary, Perpetual Planet: Heroes Of The Oceans. The line hits home, especially when it comes from the 85-year-old eco warrior who has logged more than 7,000 hours underwater and dedicated her life’s work to saving our oceans. She’s been busy with Mission Blue, an initiative she founded in 2009 to support and protect vulnerable areas in the ocean called Hope Spots. With the help of Swiss horologers Rolex, it has pledged to protect 30 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2030. With a portfolio that goes beyond making exquisite time pieces, Rolex is tirelessly working on the ‘Perpetual Planet’ campaign which supports global explorers and preserves nature. Teaming up with Mission Blue has allowed it to execute 30 expeditions and establish more than 130 Hope Spots, with the most recent being in Portugal’s Azores Archipelago, where hundreds of species, including whales and porpoises, will now be protected in the Atlantic.
