A study by NITI AAYOG (2018) on gem and jewellery industry estimated that the industry may generate a whooping 10 million employment opportunities by 2022. However, the socio-economic problem of labours have been inadequately addressed. In this context, Niti Aayog released a report on socio-economic and working conditions of workers in Indian Gold Industry, at the 50th General Council Meeting and has entrusted the National Institute of Labour Economic Research and Development (NILERD) task of examining the socio-economic and working conditions of the workers in the gold industry.
