When I was 12, boys at school nicknamed me “African roach”. For years after, whenever I looked in the mirror, I wished I could take a shower to wash away my colour. My best friend had light skin and curly hair, while I had dark skin with naturally kinky hair. During that time, I could not even enjoy her company without constantly thinking about what I could do to become as beautiful (read: Light) as her.
