Every year since 2016, the house of Dior has invited a coterie of artists to use its lady dior bag as a blank canvas for painting, sculptural assemblage and all-round imaginative freedom. Despite the circumstances of 2020, this distillation of the maison’s haute couture savoir faire did not stop and this year’s dior lady art has in fact yielded some of the most thoughtful (and fun) interpretations of the tote from the initiative. As these limited-edition pieces hit the brand’s ngee ann city boutique this month, gordon ng zeroes in on the brains behind 13 of them.

OLGA TITUS The Swiss artist’s work centres around trans culturalism (her grandparents were of Indian and Malaysian heritage) and an exploration of materiality that defies traditional “flat” art. To wit, her ornate embroidered sequinned paintings – she had studied embroidery design before taking up fine art – that she sees as the creation of a “third space”, open to multiple readings. This technique of hers married particularly well with the haute couture codes of Dior, translated onto a small and a mini version of the Lady Dior through a double-faceted finish in a kaleidoscope of colour and texture. An additional creation – in mini – is adorned with little decorative masks from cultures spanning Asia to Africa and is her homage to the arts of the world.

STORY OF THE DECADE
The French house of Dior was thinking long-term before the rest of fashion even caught up. Cue its Dior Lady Art series: an annual project that represents the bag it gets its name from, the Lady Dior, through the eyes of acclaimed artists from around the world. This year marks its 10th edition — proof that the endurance of an icon doesn't lie in hype drops, but in cultural exchange and creative freedom. CINEMA PARADISO
The house of Chanel has been a committed champion of the film world since founder Gabrielle Chanel started dressing the actresses from the United Artists studio at the request of American producer Samuel Goldwyn in the 1930s. Besides styling stars on screen and off, the brand has been an active supporter of international movie festivals, institutions and directors (local auteur Eric Khoo was one of them); has helped to restore classics such as the enigmatic Last Year at Marienbad (1961); and often draws inspiration from cinema. For Cruise 2025/26, it pays homage to the glamour of the silver screen as well as Coco Chanel's decades-spanning friendship with legendary Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. Here's an exclusive closeup look at the collection and the many ways it's coded la dolce vita.
