Don’t ignore your daydreams
I majored in astronomy and went on to teach computer skills to Russian refugees – but I also attended jewellery-making classes growing up, and at college I would pierce my friends. After graduation, I realised I was daydreaming about jewellery and design, rather than ideas rooted in science. I knew I had to take the leap and set up my own shop. I quit teaching, took classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and opened my first store in 1993, with my savings and help from family.
