In 1845, two Royal Navy ships, commanded by Sir John Franklin, embarked on a dangerous voyage to discover the North-West Passage – the fabled trade route through the Arctic Ocean from Europe to the Pacific.

But the expedition was to end in tragedy. It was later discovered through written messages left behind by the crew, and tales told by the local Inuit people, that the ships – the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus – became ice-bound when the sea around them froze.

After waiting for the ice to thaw, the 129 men, including Franklin, finally abandoned the vessels in search of help – never to be seen again.
