DANCING QUEENS

NEW MUSICAL

The Prom

From Friday 11 December, Netflix

Before the curtain (finally) falls on 2020, Netflix musical The Prom bursts on to our screens this week, promising flashy songs, sequins and a star-studded cast in the most razzle-dazzle TV event of the year.

Based on the Tony-nominated Broadway musical and novel of the same name, the one-off film is directed by Glee and American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy and features a cast list that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood, with Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden all on the bill.

The story follows New York theatre stars Dee Dee Allen (Streep) and Barry Glickman (Corden), whose careers take a nosedive when their musical about First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt is an almighty flop and the production shuts down after just one night.

In a desperate attempt to resurrect their public image, Dee Dee and Barry spot an opportunity to champion a good cause and join forces with a couple of fellow has-beens who could also do with a PR makeover – veteran chorus girl Angie Dickinson (Nicole Kidman) and failing actor Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells).

When the fab four hear of the plight of Indiana high-school student Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman), who is banned from taking her girlfriend, Alyssa Greene (Ariana DeBose), to the senior prom, they decide to launch a national campaign to help the couple fight for their rights.
