The Temple Of Self Manifested Idol

The Gowmariamman Temple is situated in Veerapandi village at a distance of 80 kms from the city of Madurai and 27 km from Theni town in the Indian State of Tamilnadu. This temple is close to the great Mullai River which flows nearby. Goddess Gowmariamman is a form of the Universal Mother (Goddess Ambika) and appears as a ‘Swayambu’ (self-manifest) idol in this temple. This Deity is famous for fulfilling the prayers of Her devotees, especially regarding the restoration of health and wellness. The devotees here staunchly believe that Goddess Gowmariamman cures eye diseases and many other infection diseases.

The Gowmariamman temple was constructed in the 14th century, by a Pandyan king named Veerapandi. It is believed that once, King Veerapandi lost his eyesight due to the effect of his past life karmas. On hearing about the glory of Goddess Gowmariamman, the King prayed to Her and begged that his eyesight be restored. The King had a dream in which he was instructed to go to the banks of the River Vaigai in a forest named Nimba Aranyam and worship Goddess Gowmariamman and Lord Kanneeswara Mudaiyar. King Veerapandi did as instructed and his eye sight was restored. King Veerapandi, as a token of gratitude, built this temple in honor of Goddess Gowmariamman!
