Q. What are your thoughts on Institutes of Eminence?
A. The benefits of Institutes of Eminence are that it will give the institutes the academic autonomy. The institutes will be free from regulations from the UGC and other regulatory bodies. This will help them grow. Universities like Manipal will have the scope to innovate and experiment with the pedagogy. Universities are in a straitjacket, we are restricted with what we can do and what we cannot do. Once that has been removed from the academics, the picture will become more clear.
It also opens up the university’s capacity to unleash campuses beyond what it already has. There will be no cap on the number of campuses in the country or outside it. The pedagogic freedom which can come out of such freedom is what Manipal is looking at in the future.
