The Third Act

For those 50 and over, rather than slowing down there’s a world of opportunity out there

Julie Lucas
The Third Act

Last year I turned 50. I may be halfway up the steps to heaven, but as we live longer us 50-somethings have plenty to embrace to turn mid-life into a better life.

According to life coach Adrian Reith, who is writing a book with his wife Judy called Act 3 – How to have a better life after 50, the generation who are entering act three have a huge amount of energy and resources. “It is called Act 3 because in many ways life used to be a three-act play and now in our generation it’s turned into four. This chunk of time gives you the chance to go ‘you know I’ve always wanted to do woodwork, I’ve been doing a desk job all these years and I’m going to move in that direction’. There’s a kind of richness and creativity about this; we are all capable of so much more than we realise.”

Life’s journey is about values, he explains. “What is important to you? What is your purpose in life? You don’t need very many friends, but loneliness is a killer. Pay attention to your attitude, if you are always a glass half empty person it will hold you back.”
