Delhi India's Capital

Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the capital of India during the British Raj. Delhi was the centre of Mughals’ Delhi Sultanate.

On the Delhi Durbar of 12 December 1911, George V the

Emperor of India shifted the capital from Calcutta to Delhi.

Construction of New Delhi was planned by English architects Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker.

In 1956 Delhi was declared a Union Territory and as per the Constitution Act of 1991, was formally named National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. National Capital Region (NCR) is a term used to include NCT and several districts from the neighbouring Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi is ruled jointly by the Central Government of India and the local Government which has a Chief Minister as head of the Government and a Lieutenant Governor as head of State.
