‘It is twilight. A few bamboo poles have been erected and a thin screen stretched across.
-
The stage is set. Darkness has fallen. Flickering street lights and oil lamps provide light. Behind the screen the puppeteers stand with their puppets, ready to deftly move arms and legs appearing to argue, fight and even fly! The sutradhaaris begin their narration to the accompaniment of the harmonium. On the other side of the screen, people of all ages sit spellbound as they are drawn into the action. The characters are familiar. Rama, Sita, Hanuman… oh look, the huge ten headed Ravana has arrived and the crowd shudders for they know what is going to happen… as the story is a beloved one.’ So goes a description from an old book of an art form which is famous in the villages of Andhra Pradesh.

Earthy Expressions
Folk art and tribal art are easily recognizable - bright colours, bold strokes, quaint ways of representing people and animals. Many actually tell a tale! India being a vast country and with so many agricultural communities and tribes living close to nature, many art forms have evolved. Many have all but disappeared. Fortunately, there is an interest in such traditional art forms and efforts are being made to revive some of them. In the next few months, we will embark on a journey learning more about some of such art forms.

Switzerland Part1
As we alighted from the train and exited Monaco station, a cool sea breeze enveloped us, as if it were a natural welcome for returning again! Our immediate task-to figure out where the rest of the contingent was, so that we could join them and return back to Cannes, for the night. However, it was not going to be easy and the next couple of hours were filled with anxiety and mild panic.
