Chilling out on a hot summer day in ancient Rome? For the emperor Augustus, his wife, Livia, and their friends, the ideal place was the dining room of Livia’s home at Prima Porta on the outskirts of the city.
To keep the temperature as cool as possible, this room was constructed partly underground. The refreshing, soothing atmosphere was enhanced by the surrounding garden, filled with flowers, fruit, birds, and trees. The branches fluttered as a breeze wafted through them.
