With Love

The keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya in East Africa have a very special job. They take care of orphaned baby elephants. How do you do that?

With Love

Elephants in the wild live in big family groups, where babies are lovingly raised by their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, big sisters, and cousins. The babies need almost constant care until they are two years old, and they continue to depend on older relatives until they’re 20 or older.

The keepers must take the place of a baby elephant’s lost family. They stay with the baby every hour of every day. They even sleep with the baby.

Baby elephants need to be fed every three hours, day and night. The keepers mix gallons and gallons of a special milk recipe for each feeding. The babies begin to eat plants when they’re about four months old, but they can’t live without milk until they’re three years old.

Reaching For The Moon

The name my parents gave me was Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr., but the name my sister gave me was the one that would stay with me all my life. She could not manage to say brother, only “Buzzer.” Later that got shortened to “Buzz,” and no one ever called me anything else.
