CATCHING A KILLER

Two weeks before the 15th anniversary of Madeleine McCann's disappearance, Portuguese prosecutors name a convicted sexual predator as a suspect

Three-year-old Madeleine McCann was asleep in a bed next to her 2-year-old twin siblings just before 10 p.m. on May 3, 2007, when she was taken from a vacation condo at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Just 180 feet away, her parents, British doctors Kate and Gerry McCann, were having dinner with friends at the resort's tapas bar, unaware of the unthinkable agony that was to follow. When Kate returned to the condo to check on the kids, she made the horrifying discovery that her daughter was missing. A lengthy investigation by Portuguese and British authorities ensued, but the trail was cold and Madeleine was never found - nor was her abductor.

But now, 15 years after her disappear an ance, authorities believe they've finally solved the case. According to reports, on April 21 – less than two weeks before the statute of limitations was set to expire Portuguese prosecutors named arguido, which translates to formal suspect: Christian Brueckner, a German citizen who is currently serving time for drug offenses and the brutal 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman.
