Being a mixed martial arts (MMA) warrior isn’t easy. There’s blood, sweat, tears, bumps and bruises as the fighters push their bodies to breaking point, taking a pummelling in the ring. It’s worse for the characters in the family-themed drama series Kingdom (2014-2017) for season 3. “They are fighting their opponents for title belts and bragging rights, they are fighting their various demons, whether it’s pills or booze or relationships… and they’re fighting each other,” says Frank Grillo – he plays Navy Streetfight trainer Alvey Kulina in the show and played trainer Frank Campana in 2011 MMA movie Warrior. “They are complex fighting machines and they’re struggling. And that is a problem,” adds the actor, who uses MMA in real life to stay in shape.
