Hollywood has a tendency to pigeonhole its stars: leading man or action hero. But sometimes you get a hybrid, like Gerard Butler. He’s a devastatingly handsome man’s man with a swoonworthy Scottish accent and an irresistible cheeky charm, who’s just as capable of sweeping us offour feet as he is at saving the world!

From kicking butt opposite Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life to melting hearts alongside Hilary Swank in P.S. I Love You and mesmerising Emmy Rossum as the masked madman in The Phantom of the Opera, the 49-year-old is a jack-of-all-trades. He recently revealed he was once approached to play James Bond also, but laughs that he’s ‘too old’ to play 007 now. Not true we say!

It was Gerard’s turn in another action role - as King Leonidas in 2006’s 300 that really put him – and his washboard abs – on the map. ‘Until then, I felt like a steam train that was slowly chugging to the top of a hill,’ the Scottish actor has said of his slow rise to fame.
