There are few stars whom fans think they know as well as Ellen DeGeneres. One of the first major celebrities to come out of the closet – in April 1997– the comedienne has long paid lip service to living honestly on her eponymous talk show.

‘I feel like you’ve all really gotten to know me over the past 17 years,’ she said at the 77th Golden Globe Awards on January 5 while accepting the Carol Burnett Award, before getting big laughs for joking, ‘I’m an open book, and I couldn’t have done it without my husband Mark. Mark, you’re my rock.’

But the 61-year-old TV icon and her wife Portia de Rossi, 46, actually live a secret, strange life behind closed doors.
