He grew up in the heart of Hollywood, but Peter Fonda, who has died from lung cancer aged 79, became a counter-culture poster boy – the hippie biker who came to represent a generation in 1969 film classic Easy Rider.

Born into an acting dynasty, Peter was the son of Hollywood icon Henry and the younger brother of two-time Oscar-winner Jane, who led tributes to the star. “I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing,” she said.
