Candice Carty-Williams’ debut novel is ruling the hearts of readers and critics alike

JUDGING FROM THE subject matter, Candice Carty-Williams’ international best-seller, Queenie, wouldn’t seem to have the makings of an occasionally humorous read: The eponymous heroine, newly single in London, has a series of terrible one-night stands, made all the more terrible by men who see her as a sexual novelty. “It’s dehumanizing,” says Carty-Williams of her character’s experiences. “So many of us [black women] are looking for love, and all we’re presented with is, ‘Can I come around and have sex with you?’” But despite the serious topics Queenie explores, the book—which was recently released in paperback—is indeed very, very funny.
