India Set to Grow as Thought leader in Wellness Tourism
India is one of the fastest-growing modern spa and wellness markets in the world and a thought-leader in the emerging travel category of wellness tourism, which has explosive potential for our industry.
Globally, Wellness Tourism is a $494 billion industry. Annually, there are more than 10 million primary wellness trips and 76 million secondary wellness customers. In contrast, the India Wellness tourism industry is said to be around $9.2billion (mostly domestic) only. The number of wellness travelers coming to India is estimated at only about 0.5- 0.75million. Just a tiny fraction!
This is in spite of the fact that India offers some of the best wellness practices in the world in the form of Ayurveda, Yoga, Meditation, Siddha, Ashrams, etc. So what ails our largely 'unorganized' Indian wellness tourism Industry? It is the combination of low acceptance by the domestic customers, poor marketing and lack of standardization of the practices and service providers.
Today, there are over 1000 such spas/wellness centers in India& Sri Lanka, mostly run by Spa owners/doctors. Low occupancy, lack of standardization&poor maintenance of the existing infrastructure, etc plague these centers. They depend mostly on international tourists and non-resident Indians as their customers. The revenue lost due to unutilized inventory is estimated at $1 billion. Traditional marketing through travel agents and merely putting up a webssite needs to be replaced / supplemented by sophisticated, customer friendly Digital Marketing systems.
