All high performers are adept at achieving superlative results, but managing people is in itself a different ball game. For managers who are not used to managing people, it can be a humongous challenge to establish a cohesive team.

At some point in time, most of us have wondered as to why a team of smart, experienced people do not perform well. Generally, it is not an issue of lack of skills, rather it often boils down to the inability to generate ideas together, or get things done as a team. Most of us have seen high performing teams gradually wither away and become dysfunctional. All high performers are adept at achieving superlative results, but managing people is in itself a different ball game. For managers who are not used to managing people, it can be a humongous challenge to establish a cohesive team. Even for managers who are skilled at people management, it can still be a challenge to get different personalities to work together. Teamwork, after all, is the ultimate competitive advantage. Building a cohesive team is an interminable endeavour. Every new project come associated with a different challenge. Dysfunction is detrimental to not just the team but also to the organisation on the whole. Most business challenges are nothing but a microcosm of what is seen in our society.
